The company committed to sponsoring the campaign with donations from its global corporate social responsibility program ‘Better Planet,’ as well as with individual donations from Alvogen employees.
Robert Wessman, Chairman and CEO of Alvogen, commented:
Making people’s lives better is very much a part of the Alvogen mission. We are deeply committed to promoting initiatives aimed at making the world a better place for women and children. We hope that our donations to the UN Women’s cause in Jordan will help Syrian refugee women and girls find some much-needed solace.
Nearly 80,000 Syrians who have escaped the conflict in Syria have sought shelter in the Za´atari refugee camp in Jordan. The camp is the second largest camp of its kind in the world and the fourth biggest settlement in Jordan.
About 80% of the people living in Za'atari are women and girls. Most of the women there are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and isolation. They have suffered incredible trauma and are in high danger of being sexually assaulted as well as suffering other violence.
UN Women, with the support of Alvogen, have started an emergency fundraising campaign to support the Oasis program in the Za'atari refugee camp. The Oases are spaces where women can rest and be safe from constant worry and threats of violence. At the Oases, the women receive education, day-care for the children, job opportunities and psychological support for dealing with trauma and violence.
UN Women is the UN organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. Alvogen is a key sponsor for UN Women in Iceland.
Better Planet is the company's global corporate social responsibility program that builds on Alvogen's mission of making people's lives better by addressing important social issues and making high-quality medicines more accessible around the world.
